Should my child take private instrument lessons and how to I find a good private music teacher?

Should my child take private instrument lessons?

Nearly 100% of the time, the answer is YES! Having a specialist work with your child can only be beneficial, as they can address instrument-specific issues. They can address the learning needs and challenges of each child more easily in a one-on-one setting than in a larger group.

Remember we said “Nearly 100% of the time?” Well, if your child doesn’t want to take private instrument lessons, isn’t willing to put in the time practicing – or can’t because of other after-school activities that take precedence in his/her mind; or isn’t willing to listen to different ways of doing things on his/her instrument, then we recommend you not spend the money on private lessons, as it will become a frustration for both teacher and student. But 99.9% of the time, private lessons are definitely the right move for your student musician!

How do I find a good private music teacher?

First, look for a music teacher that is an experienced, certified teacher. Even for beginners, having a fellow student try to teach your child is probably not a great idea. Learning how to teach a certain instrument (“pedagogy”) is much more than simply learning how to play that instrument. And you don’t want your child developing bad or harmful habits, so having the right teacher is important!

Don’t hesitate to interview several teachers. Ask what method book(s) they use, and what repertoire your child will study. In general, a book suitable for band or strings class is not a great private lesson book, as it’s more geared to an ensemble than to the specific techniques needed for your child’s instrument. An instrument-specific method book, along with various warm-ups and standard repertoire can give your child the optimum benefit from private lessons.

Remember, private music lessons are not the time to work only on your child's school band or strings music, or music for a specific tryout or competition. Lessons are designed to make your child a better musician first; not just to teach him/her a few certain pieces or excerpts. Learning the basics, and learning musicianship, will help him/her succeed in any class or audition.

Most teachers will give a free trial lesson. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of this service, and don’t hesitate to seek out a teacher with whom your child can relate. You may be surprised how much one-on-one instruction can motivate your child and help him/her excel!
