Welcome to Percussion
The percussion family includes a wide variety of rhythm instruments— it’s not “just drums!” Most beginners start with bells, and a practice pad; and will eventually get to play snare, bass drum, cymbals, and much more!
Percussionists have “rudiments,” which are like scales — certain rhythmic patterns that are best practiced on a practice pad. Your band director will tell you exactly what percussion equipment you need for class. Some band directors may also require that you have a year or two of piano lessons, or that you audition before choosing to play percussion.
Checklist of items needed:
Here is a checklist of typical items you will need to get ready to play! You may also want to check with your music teacher for any additional items he or she suggests:
an extra set of drum sticks
an extra set of mallets
a metronome
a pencil
a stick bag
your band textbook
drum rudiment dictionary
a music stand
All of these items are available through Musical Innovations!
Some things to remember:
Please keep your percussion kit in its case when not in use.
Please do not let anyone else play your percussion kit or “air drum” with your sticks or mallets.
Remember, practice is an essential part of playing an instrument. Practicing is actually “band homework,” and should be given the same importance as homework in any other academic subject. Give it your best, and you will be amazed how rapidly you progress!
Instruments belonging to Musical Innovations cannot be left overnight at school at any time.
If this sounds confusing, just ask your teacher or someone at Musical Innovations to demonstrate. We are happy to help!
